Netflix For OnePlus 5, 5T Can’t Play Videos In HD (For Now)

With our smartphones sporting display resolutions that go beyond Full HD, it is no surprise that various video services are offering Full HD or higher-resolution video playback via their apps. Unfortunately for OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T owners, it appears that Netflix for both devices currently do not support HD video playback.

Note that this isn’t just Netflix, but also other video streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies, and so on. This is according to a report from The Verge who recently pointed out the issue which was discovered in a posting on the OnePlus forums. According to the post, it seems that this is due to the lack of support for Widevine Level 1 DRM.

If you’re not familiar with Widevine, we suppose you can’t really be blamed since for the most part, most of our phones have no issues with HD video playback or better. As it stands, the 5T supports Widevine Level 3 which supports standard definition streams, but the good news is that according to a company spokesperson, there are plans for an update that will enable Level 1, although there is no mention of when it will be released.

It does seem odd that for a smartphone in this day and age would lack HD streaming, but hopefully the update will come soon for the sake of OnePlus customers.
