The OnePlus 5T introduced a Face Unlock feature that was expected to arrive on the OnePlus 5 as well. It won’t be surprising given that both handsets are quite similar in terms of hardware. It was first reported last month that the OnePlus 5T Face Unlock feature might be included in the Oreo update for OnePlus 5. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has confirmed that based on popular demand, the company is going to bring the Face Unlock feature to the OnePlus 5.

The Face Unlock feature that was introduced with the OnePlus 5T doesn’t need any complex sensors or facial recognition tech like the iPhone X. It uses the handset’s front-facing camera to power the facial recognition feature.

What this means is that there are no hardware limitations for the company if it wants to bring this feature to the OnePlus 5. The company’s co-founder has now confirmed that this is precisely what the intend to do.

OnePlus has started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo-based Oxygen OS 5.0 for the OnePlus 5 officially. The update’s changelog doesn’t mention this feature. So with Pei saying that this feature will be released for the OnePlus 5, it may only be a matter of time before the Face Unlock feature is released for the OnePlus 5.
