Apple today announced that it’s teaming up with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai and her Malala Fund to support girls’ education. Apple will be the fund’s first Laureate partner and will enable the fund to significantly expand its efforts to support girls’ education and advocate for equal opportunity. The Malala Fund champions “every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education,” according to the company’s press release.

The Malala Fund expects to double the number of grants awarded by its Gulmakai Network with Apple’s support. Apple’s contribution will help the fund extend the funding programs to India and Latin America. The initial goal is to extend secondary education opportunities to over 100,000 girls.

The Malala Fund will also receive help from Apple in scaling its organization with technology, research, and curriculum into policy changes that are needed to help girls across the globe attend school and complete their education. Apple CEO Tim Cook is also going to join the leadership council of the fund.

“I am grateful that Apple knows the value of investing in girls and is joining Malala Fund in the fight to ensure all girls can learn and lead without fear,” Malala Yousafzai said in a statement.

“Malala is a courageous advocate for equality. She’s one of the most inspiring figures of our time, and we are honored to help her extend the important work she is doing to empower girls around the world,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook.
