[CES 2018] Dell is coming again to CES with its new XPS 15 2-in-1, an update of last year’s model that was not convertible. According to Dell “it is the most powerful 2-in-1 ever”. We HP just launched a pretty powerful 2-in-1 yesterday,  in the shape of the HP Spectre 15 x360 Convertible, with a similar configuration. We will need to get the units and run some benchmark later to really know.Just like one version of the new HP device, The Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 hardware features a combination of Intel 8th gen Core (CPU) and AMD’s RX Vega M graphics unit (GPU), a powerful combo and the result of an Intel/AMD partnership that delivers great performance.

Sleek and thin metal  design

At 16mm at its thickest point (9mm thinnest) the new XPS 15 is thinner than the HP Spectre 15 (19.3mm -0.76”) featuring the same Intel Core/AMD RX Vega M hardware combo. The back cover is made of NC machined aluminum in platinum silver and the interior gets a high-quality carbon fiber palm rest in black color.

Next-gen InfinityEdge 4K display

Its more compact body (W13.9”xD9.3”XH0.35-0.63”) harbors a similar 15.6-inch 4K (3200×1800) display than the HP convertible and may deliver smaller ultra-thin borders around the screen (HP Spectre 15 x360 AMD combo – W14.13”xD 9.84 x H0.76”). We’ll check that on the show floor at CES.

The next-generation InfinityEdge display with edge-to-edge Corning Gorilla Glass 4 benefits from 100% Adobe RGB color spectrum and the new Dell Cinema software suite that aims at enhancing the entertainment experience.

Hardware and performance

The performance has increased significantly compared to last year’s model, thanks to the new AMD Radeon RX Vega M (6MB cache or 8MB cache), which performs better than last generation’s GeForce GTX 1050 (and even better than the Intel’s HD Graphics 630).

The new XPS 15 is powered by Intel  8th generation processor that has double the number of cores when compared to the 7th generation. Customers will have a choice to purchase a version with the 8th Gen Intel Quad Core i5-8305G or the 8th Gen Intel Quad Core i7-8705G.

As a result, we believe that Dell is entitled to brag about the great performance delivered in such a compact and elegant form factor. On the memory side, Dell offers from 8GB to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and from 128GB (non-PCIe) up to 1 TB (PCIe) internal storage options.

A computing system for Creatives

The high-quality high-resolution display combined with the strong GPU performance makes the XPS 15 2-in-1 the perfect mobile computing machine for creatives. So the last piece of hardware they need is the Dell Premium Active Pen with 4066 pressure sensitivity that can be used to draw on the touchscreen while in tablet mode.

Pricing and availability

The Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 will be available in Spring 2018 at a starting price of $1299.99, so $70 less than the most affordable HP Spectre 15 x360.
