Last we heard, which was back in September last year, the folks at Essential announced that they were working on the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Essential Phone. The update was scheduled for a release in the next “few months”, although clearly that has not happened, and the bad news is that it looks like it may never happen.

In a tweet by the official Essential account, the company has announced that they will no longer be releasing the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the phone. Now before you get up in arms over the announcement, note that the Oreo update is still planned for the handset, but instead of Android 8.0, the team is now waiting for Android 8.1 and will release that instead.

According to Essential, they claim that this is due to various stability issues that were discovered in Android 8.0 during the testing phase of the update. They claim that they believe that these issues will be addressed in Android 8.1, which is why they have decided to focus their energy on the Android 8.1 update.

As a result, the release of the update is expected to be delayed by a few more weeks, but they do plan on releasing the beta for Android 8.1 which will help them test it out further before a public release. It is a bit of a bummer, but we suppose better a stable release than one riddled with bugs and stability issues, right?
