The 90th Academy Awards nominations were announced earlier today and Netflix has bagged four of them for its film Mudbound. It includes a nomination for Rachel Morrison in the Best Achievement in Cinematography category. Morrison has made history as she has become the first female nominee for Best Cinematography. It’s historic because this category has been dominated by men since the last 89 Academy Award ceremonies.

Mudbound is the first non-documentary production from Netflix to receive any nominations from the Academy so it’s particularly special for the online streaming service as well.

It has received a total of four Oscar nominations – one each for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Supporting Actress for Mary J. Blige, and Best Achievement in Cinematography for Rachel Morrison.

The significance of this achievement doesn’t end here. Blige also wrote the song that this movie has received a nod for and has become the first person ever to receive an acting and songwriting nomination in the same year. She also happens to be the first actor to receive a nomination for a film directed by a woman of color.

Netflix has also received nominations in the Best Documentary category. Icarus and Strong Island, two of the five nominees in that category, were both distributed by Netflix.
