A new Fable game is now being developed, according to a new report, which claims that work on this “big-budget” title has now begun. Microsoft, the franchise owner, has reportedly handed over the development duties to UK-based developer Playground, best known for the Forza Horizon games for Xbox and PC.

Citing sources “close to the project,” Eurogamer reports that Microsoft has tasked Fable with creating this new Fable game. Microsoft hasn’t commented on the matter so there’s no official response from the company as yet.

It’s not entirely impossible given that the developer revealed its plans for its first non-racing game ever back in November last year. It didn’t provide a lot of details about the project, only saying that the new title will be an open-world action RPG.

The report adds that the new Fable is going to be planned as a story and will provide a character-focussed open-world action RPG experience. Microsoft is said to be making a significant investment in the title with more than 200 people being put on the team to develop the game.

It also cautions that the game won’t be released in the near future because it’s still early days in the development process and Playground remains busy with staffing up the team for this project.

Microsoft’s apparent decision to return to this franchise comes almost two years after it shut down Fable creator Lionhead and canceled Fable Legends. It was supposed to be a free-to-play game with a focus on multiplayer.

No word as yet on when we can expect the new Fable game to arrive.
