Plex has launched a new way to consume your locally-stored media content and that too in virtual reality. It has announced the launch of Plex VR on Google’s Daydream virtual reality headset today. The good news is that the base package doesn’t require a Plex Plass subscription so all users will be able to get a taste of this virtual reality experience.

In order to enjoy this experience, users require a Plex media server, their compatible smartphone, a Daydream headset, and obviously content that they’d like to watch. They can even play local videos on the Android device and that includes 3D as well as 360/180-degree video.

There’s a co-watching feature as well which enables users to watch their Plex Media Server videos with friends in real-time. There’s even voice chat functionality. It supports up to four people with head positions being updated in real-time.

All users get a fancy virtual apartment as the setting for their VR experience. There’s a drive-in movie theater experience as well but just like the co-watching feature, it’s limited to those who have a Plex Pass subscription. Only one person in the group of four needs to have the Plex Pass subscription in order to invite the others to the theater for a viewing session.

Plex users can now head over to the Google Play Store and download the Plex VR app for free.
