High-end camera maker Red announced its $1,200 Hydrogen One smartphone last year. The company’s premium smartphone has a holographic 5.7 inch display that uses nanotechnology to switch between traditional 2D content, 3D content, and holographic multi-view content seamlessly. It didn’t say when the handset would be released back then but the company has now revealed that the Red Hydrogen One release is going to take place in the summer.

The company has revealed on its official forums that it’s going to start taking pre-orders for the handset “probably in April,” and that the Hydrogen One release is going to take place “sometime in the summer.”

It hasn’t provided any further details at this point in time but did mention that there’s “unprecedented” post carrier support for the device and that it will have the “big dogs” as social media partners.

As far as the specs are concerned, the handset will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835x processor with a 4,500mAh battery. It also features dual-SIM support, USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and it’s going to be slightly bigger than other 5.7 inch smartphones.

The handset’s 4V or “four view” technology is what will set it apart from the competition. It will enable the handset to handle 2D media, stereo 3D, AR, VR, and mixed reality content without requiring headsets or glasses.

Red hasn’t detailed precisely how the technology works but it does offer a description in the latest update on its forums which says that “The 4V files match the pixel resolution of a traditional 2D file, which is great for downloading. The resolution perception is just different. The horizontal resolution of 2D is now split into depth layers. It gives a completely different feeling. All the pixels are there… but instead of ‘looking at’ a pic, you are immersed in the image. It is quite spectacular.”

The Red Hydrogen One will cost $1,200 when it’s released later this year.
