Samsung Uses AI To Transform Any Video Content Into 8K

[CES 2018] At this point in time, 4K resolution is starting to become the standard, where we’re starting to see more TVs and displays and video content being offered in that resolution. However if we were to look towards the future, it’s safe to say that the future standard could be that of 8K.

While it might be a while before we start seeing 8K TVs hit the market (some companies are already preparing for it), it looks like Samsung has a way to allow existing video content to be upscaled to 8K resolution to fit the standard in the future. Announced at CES 2018, Samsung has taken the wraps off what they are calling the world’s first 8K AI technology.

This technology will debut in Samsung’s 85-inch 8K QLED TV and through the use of AI, will help to upscale lower-resolution images into 8K quality. While upscaling is definitely not something new, presumably the use of AI will help upscale images in a smarter and more natural manner.

According to Samsung, “By increasing image processing 64 times, the technology helps offer natural images in high-resolution, without compromising gradation in the picture. In the image of an aurora, for instance, the TV provides consumers with subtle, seamless gradation.” The good news is that if you wanted to future-proof yourself and your purchases, Samsung’s 8K QLED TVs with the upscaling AI technology will be launching in the second half of the year.
