If you’ve ever been in a car accident, then you know how troublesome it can be. In some cases a police report needs to be filed before you can file for an insurance claim, and all that paperwork and driving around can be rather taxing, or in some cases inconvenient if the accident is bad enough where your car has been rendered inoperable.

However over in the UK, it seems that the government is now considering a scheme (via Engadget) in which drivers can report car accidents online. With this new system, it is believed that it will make accident reporting quicker and will also reduce the need for people to take time off work to go file a report (in the UK accidents need to be reported within 24 hours).

It also ensures that the police can focus their efforts and resources on other matters as opposed to recording details about the accident at the counter. According to Transport Minister Jesse Norman, “As well as improving the service to the public, more efficient collection of accident data also holds out the possibility of more effective use of that data. By using the data to establish trends, we will be able to develop better informed policy; highway authorities will be better able to think about road design; and the police will be better able to spot fraud.”

Note that this system is not in effect yet and the government is currently accepting consultations for such their proposal. The consultations will run for 12 weeks and will close on the 24th of April.
