In the Final Fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy VII is probably one of the franchise’s most recognizable and famous games, with Cloud’s character also being more or less the mascot for the series. However in the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake, it looks like Square Enix will be redesigning the character.

Now before you get too upset, given how iconic he is, apparently the redesign is for the better and is apparently the closest to the original design, so presumably it won’t be too far-fetched or outlandish. This was revealed at the Final Fantasy series’ 30th anniversary exhibition where screenshots of the game were revealed, along with an appearance by the game’s director Tetsuya Nomura.

According to development leader Naoki Hamaguchi who was describing the redesign of the character, “while Cloud may look this way, he was a dork. I believe those of you who played the the original would understand what I mean by saying he’s a dorky character.” Since we did not attend the event, we have no idea what the redesign looks like, especially since Square Enix is reportedly not planning on showing off the game (aside from at the event) for a while.

At this point in time there is still no word on when the game will be released, although we have heard that its release date could be announced later this year. However based on an investor’s document from last year, it has been suggested that the game could be released in 2018 at the earliest.
