With companies like Vivo launching a phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor, it has renewed speculation that we can expect to see more companies adopt the technology in the future. Samsung has been rumored to be trying to get their in-display sensors to work but haven’t had much luck.
Now it seems like Samsung might have dropped their plans entirely, at least that’s according to a report from The Bell (via XDA) who claims that the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will not feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. Apparently Samsung has tried both capacitive and optical sensors, but has faced difficulties with regards to accuracy for the optical sensor.
As for the capacitive version, while they could be a possible alternative, there is apparently a question of durability where they won’t be as durable, which means that Samsung probably doesn’t want to have to deal with customer complaints about fingerprint sensors not working further down the line.
So what does this mean for the Galaxy Note 9? Apparently this means that Samsung will continue to use the regular fingerprint sensor found on its previous phones, where the sensor will continue to remain on the back. Obviously you should take this with a grain of salt for now as it might be a bit too early to speculate about the Note 9 when the Galaxy S9 has yet to be launched.
