Imagine you’re out and your phone is running low on battery and you don’t have a charger handy. You could send a message to your family or friends to let them know you might soon be unreachable, and you could also share your location in case they want to know where you are or where you’re going to be.

However it looks like in a future update to Google Maps based on an APK teardown of the app by Android Police, it looks like Google Maps could soon allow users to share their battery status along with their location. This is based on strings which will inform the other person of your battery level, and it will also let the other person know if your phone is charging or isn’t charging.

We’re not 100% sure what such a feature might be used for, but one possibility is the scenario we mentioned above, where users can let the other person know their battery status and level so that they know if your battery is low, maybe they can bring a charger or a power bank, or know where you are in case they can’t reach you later and there’s an emergency.

No word on when Google plans on introducing the feature to the public release of Google Maps, but we’ll keep an eye out for it in future updates.
