Even though the global tablet market has seen better days, Apple continues to be the leader, outselling its biggest rivals. Latest data from industry tracker IDC shows that Apple sold more tablets than both Samsung and Amazon combined. Apple itself confirmed in its earnings results that it sold 43.8 million iPads in 2017.

Apple remains the top tablet vendor in the world by a significant margin. The iPad is still the most sought-after tablet globally since the figures show that Samsung and Amazon combined didn’t sell as many tablets as Apple did in all of 2017.

IDC’s estimates suggest that Samsung shipped 24.9 million tablets in 2017 while Amazon shipped 16.7 million tablets. When combined, they managed to ship 41.6 million units, which is 2.2 million lower than the 43.8 million iPads that Apple is confirmed to have sold to end customers.

Samsung’s tablet shipments actually recorded a 6.4 percent decline compared to the 26.6 million units it shipped in 2016. Amazon has seen considerable growth, though, with its unit shipments surging 38 percent from 12.1 million units in 2016.

If things continue to progress this way there’s a real possibility that Amazon might end up overtaking Samsung for the second position in the global tablet market. It will still have a ways to go to catch Apple but Samsung is well within its reach.

Amazon did overtake Samsung for second place on the list in the final quarter of last year, shipping 7.7 million tablets against Samsung’s 7 million tablets. The Korean giant saw a decline of 13 percent year-over-year while Amazon’s tablet shipments were up a whopping 50.3 percent compared to Q4 2016.
