Given how iconic and classic some supervillains in comics have become, it is only natural that some of them might actually be more famous and popular than some superheroes, and it is understandable that movie studios would want to capitalize on that by giving them their own movie.

This is something we’ve heard with regards to Batman’s main antagonist, The Joker, in which a standalone movie is said to be in the works. Now according to a report from Variety, it looks like actor Joaquin Phoenix has been tapped to play the role of the Clown Prince of Crime in the upcoming film by Todd Phillips.

It is not official at the moment as negotiations have yet to begin, but apparently Phillips has made it clear that Phoenix is the top choice to star in the role, and apparently the actor has also agreed, but like we said it is not official yet and Warner Bros. has yet to comment on it. Prior to this there were rumors that Leonardo DiCaprio could play the role of the Joker which no doubt would have been a sight to behold.

For those wondering about Jared Leto’s Joker, who made his first appearance in Suicide Squad, it seems that these standalone films will exist as one-off stories about certain DC characters, and that Leto’s Joker will exist separately in the DCEU. In any case take it with a grain of salt, but what do you guys think of Phoenix’s potential role as the Joker? Yay or nay?
