Considering that Joss Whedon created Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it seemed like he would have been a good fit for Warner Bros. Batgirl movie, in which he was slated to write and direct the standalone film when he came on board the project back in 2017. Unfortunately it seems that will no longer be the case.

In a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon has announced that he will no longer be involved in the project. Whedon cites the “lack of story” as being the reason why he decided not to continue with it. “Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story.”

He also added, “I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed?'”, referring to DC president Geoff Johns and Warner Bros. Picture Group president Toby Emmerich. THR reports that sources have confirmed Whedon’s statement, saying that after spending about a year trying to figure out a story, he just could not crack the code of what a Batgirl movie should be about.

Directing Batgirl would not have been Whedon’s first time directing a superhero movie. Whedon was the director behind Marvel movies such as The Avengers back in 2012, Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, and also helped with the reshoots of DC’s Justice League movie.
