From time to time new “challenges” spring up on the internet, with some of them being fun and entertaining, while others are just outright dangerous. In more recent times, a new “challenge” emerged which involved people challenging each other to eat laundry detergent pods despite the fact that it is obviously not safe, but hey, it’s the internet, right?

This has resulted in some supermarkets being forced to lock up their detergents behind glass doors to prevent people from opening them and eating them in the store, but if lawmakers have their way, hopefully these challenges will soon die. Lawmakers from New York Sen. Brad Hoylman and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas have announced plans for a bill that will make laundry detergent pods look less edible.

As it stands certain brands feature colorful designs which admittedly look like they could be candy. Plus the fact that they are inside pods that are soft and squishy only seems to add to that illusion, especially to younger children who might not know better. Don Huber, director of product safety for Consumer Reports adds, “Whether or not the New York bill passes and is signed into law, manufacturers should modify liquid laundry packets to be less attractive to young children and cognitively impaired adults, who mistake the pods for something tasty to eat.”
