While laptops and tablets have certainly helped to make note-taking a lot easier and more efficient, there are some studies which have suggested that taking notes by hand can actually be more beneficial in the learning process. Or maybe you’re just someone who is a traditionalist and still prefers to do things by pen and paper.

If that describes you, you might be interested to learn that notebook maker Moleskine has announced their latest smart accessory in the form of the Pen+ Ellipse. This is a pen that when combined with the company’s Ncode smart paper, will be able to “read” your handwriting and converts it into a digital copy, meaning you’ll not only have a physical copy but also a digital copy to back up or make edits on.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Moleskine introduce such a system, but one of the benefits of the Pen+ Ellipse is its ability to store the data it records offline. This means that should you find yourself in a place with no internet, the device will be able to store it in its memory until you get a chance to sync it.

None of this comes cheap as the Pen+ Ellipse will be priced at $180 and given that you will also need to purchase the Ncode smart paper to truly take advantage of what it has to offer, the costs can start to mount, but if you’re interested head on over to Moleskine’s website for the details.
