Several years ago, Opera launched Opera Max which for those unfamiliar, is an app for mobile devices that was designed to help reduce data consumption and also provide users with VPN-like features. However last year Opera announced that Opera Max would be discontinued, much to the disappointment of many.

The good news is that in an announcement by Samsung (via TechCrunch), it appears that the South Korean tech giant has “rescued” Opera Max and has since relaunched and rebranded it to Samsung Max. “Samsung Electronics, today introduced Samsung Max, a new and free Android application designed to promote mobile data savings and application privacy management, with data usage monitoring and enhanced Wi-Fi security.”

Just like Opera Max, Samsung Max will more or less offer the same features. This includes a Data Saving Mode that compresses images, videos, music files, and webpages. There is also the ability to block background data usage. There will also be a Privacy Protection Mode that offers encryption, tracker blocking, and a DNS masking service.

The app is currently available for download on Android devices via the Google Play Store, although for now it seems that it will be exclusive to Samsung’s own handsets. The app and its services will be free, although in exchange it appears that there will be ads.
