When it comes to music, a lot of credit is usually given to the people who perform the song, and rarely given to the people who wrote or produced it (unless they happen to be famous too), unless you happen to work in the industry and know the ins and outs, and the who’s whos in the songwriting scene.However for those who are curious about the behind-the-scenes, Spotify has announced a new feature in which users can now check out the songwriting and producing credits on tracks, as you can see in the image above where it lists who wrote the song, who performed it, and who produced it.
Spotify notes that the feature is still early in development and is mostly based off on record label-provided metadata, which mean there might be instances where it is inaccurate or incomplete, but as they say this is the first step. According to Tiffany Kumar, Global Head of Songwriter Relations, Spotify, “Songwriters are an integral force behind the music we love. With the newly launched credits feature, we aim to increase songwriter and producer visibility and, in turn, foster discovery among new collaborators, industry partners, and fans.”
Spotify isn’t alone in trying to give more credit to songwriters, at least in a more public space. Recently the Copyright Royalty Board has announced a new ruling in which streaming services, such as Spotify, will have to pay songwriters an increase of 43.8% in terms of royalties.
