Considering that games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was initially designed for the Wii U, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch is essentially a port of the Wii U version of the game, we’re sure some are wondering about Super Mario Odyssey, and whether or not the game might have been initially intended for the Wii U.

According to Nintendo, the short answer is no. Speaking in an interview in the latest issue of Game Informer, the game’s producer Yoshiaki Koizumi said that Super Mario Odyssey was always intended for the Switch. “It was always planned for Nintendo Switch. We really were considering a lot of the hardware capabilities specifically for this game, and wanted to make the most use of them.”

Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi added, “I think the idea of what the Nintendo Switch is became very important around here, because it can both function as a console or portable device. We really thought about what sort of software features would make the best use of those capabilities. Super Mario Odyssey really answers to a lot of that capability in the way we had hoped. We wanted to time it for year-end release to make the most of that as well.”

The game was announced and launched last year and its launch was a huge success, where the game managed to sell over 2 million copies within its first 3 days of its release.
