The home video release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi will take place next month and it’s going to be the very first movie in this franchise to be available in 4K. Lucasfilm and Disney have announced today that The Last Jedi is coming to home video in both digital and physical formats which include 4K ultra HD for the first time ever. No other movie in this insanely popular franchise has seen a home video release in 4K ultra HD.

4K Blu-ray Disc movies started rolling out a couple of years ago but Disney wasn’t really quick to adopt the format. Both the Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are currently available in 4K UHD and neither are the original or prequel trilogies.

Disney took its sweet time in adopting this format. The first movie that it did release on 4K Blu-ray is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which was released on the format in August last year.

It has also been confirmed that the home video release of The Last Jedi brings support for Dolby Atmos audio and HDR color through Dolby Vision. There will be several bonus features as well which include a feature-length documentary titled The Director and the Jedi.

Disney is going to release the digital version first on March 13th for Movies Anywhere before the DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Blu-ray versions are released a fortnight later on March 27th. The 4K Blu-ray is going to cost $34.99 while the Blu-ray will cost $29.99.
