The lack of USB Type-C ports on the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop irked many customers who picked up these devices and Microsoft confirmed back then that it would release a Surface USB-C dongle to address the matter. The company hasn’t released one as yet but it wants customers to know that it hasn’t forgotten about it. Microsoft says that it’s going to release the USB-C dongle later this year.

Microsoft has previously promised to release the Surface USB-C dongle by the end of 2017 but that didn’t happen. The company is now promising to release the adaptor later this year.

A spokesperson for the company has confirmed that the USB-C dongle for Surface products is “on the roadmap for later this year.” No further details have been provided as yet so it’s too soon to say when we can expect it to arrive in 2018.

The dongle’s purpose will be to connect the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop to USB Type-C accessories. It will be plugged into the Surface Connector on these devices and will also enable users to charge a device with a Type-C charger or send data back and forth with a peripheral.

A purported image of this adapter has since been leaked online. It looks as dongle-like as you’d expect it to so no surprises there. It’s also unclear how much Microsoft’s Surface USB-C dongle will cost when it’s finally released.
