Oculus Rift Headsets Finally Unbricked With Software Update

Every single Oculus Rift virtual reality headset stopped working yesterday. It was immediately unclear why all headsets had essentially been bricked but it was soon discovered that Oculus apparently forget to renew its security certificate. The expired certificate caused part of the Rift app to crash and rendered it incapable of accessing VR software. Oculus said yesterday that it was looking into the matter and has now confirmed that all units are up and running again after it rolled out a software update to fix the issue.

Oculus has detailed the steps to fix this error in a separate support page which mentions all of the steps one is required to take in order to get the headset working again.

Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell acknowledged on Twitter that “this was a mistake on our end” and that the company apologizes for the inconvenience caused. He further added that all those who were impacted by the downtime will be given Oculus store credit and that more details about this compensation will be provided soon.

Those who were facing this issue yesterday should now follow the steps mentioned in the support page to ensure that they can access VR software once again on the Rift.
