As much as we would love for companies to continually support their devices, it is understandable that after several years that support will end. Unfortunately for Samsung users, it looks like that time has come for some older handsets as the company appears to have stopped security updates for some of their 2016 models.

For those unfamiliar, several years ago following the discovery of a potentially dangerous Android malware, companies started committing to releasing monthly security updates for their handsets to help keep them as up to date as possible against threats. However like we said, they can’t be supported forever.

The handsets that are no longer supported include the 2016 models of the Galaxy A3, Galaxy J1, and the Galaxy J3. Samsung has also updated its monthly list to include the Galaxy A8 (2018) model, but oddly enough the Galaxy A8+ (2018) has been added to the quarterly list, meaning that it will receive updates every 3 months instead of every month.

This is odd considering that both phones were announced at the same time, so we’re not sure why one is receiving updates more often than the other. The list does not include the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, but given that they are Samsung’s latest flagships presumably they will be included in monthly updates as well.
