Recently it was reported that Apple might not be able to source OLED panels from LG due to the company apparently not being able to meet production targets. As a result it was reported that Apple might have to go back to relying on Samsung, which therein lies a problem because if the reports are accurate, Samsung charges a premium for its OLED panels.
The good news is that Apple could be looking for a way to cut costs because a report from DigiTimes (via Cult of Mac) has revealed that Apple is negotiating with Samsung on OLED prices where Samsung might only charge Apple $100 per panel versus $110. Apple is also said to be doubling their orders and they are hoping that the amount of orders will convince Samsung to offer a discount.
There have been rumors suggesting that Apple could charge more than $1,000 for its 2018 iPhones and it seems that the OLED panels could be one of the factors determining its high price. However it should be noted that price of components is hard to pin down accurately. This is because companies might offer discounts in bulk, or discounts based on their relationship with their customers, so obviously this should be taken with a grain of salt for now.
