Last year Atari revealed that they would be sort-of reviving their console with the Ataribox which was later renamed to the be the Atari VCS. Unfortunately for gamers who were hoping to get their hands on the console, it seems that you will have a bit of waiting to do because it is only expected to begin shipping in 2019.

However pre-orders for the console will be kicking off next month on the 30th of May where it will launch on Indiegogo where it is expected to be priced starting at $199. Given that this is a crowdfunded project, we can only assume that Atari is only planning on building as many units as there are orders, which could explain why it is only shipping in 2019. It is also expected that there will be a Collector’s Edition that features a wood front for those who don’t mind paying a bit more.

Unfortunately details about the console are still a bit scarce, such as its specs and its features, and more importantly the games that will come bundled with it. However it is expected to be more powerful than what Nintendo has released so far with the NES and SNES Classic consoles as it will support 4K resolution, built-in WiFi, USB 3, and Bluetooth 5, although at this point it is unclear as to what Atari’s plans are for the Atari VCS.

Will it simply be a souped up version of what Nintendo has done with its “Classic” re-releases? Or is Atari planning on making some kind of comeback? We suppose we’ll have to wait and see. For those interested, you can leave your email on Indiegogo and be notified when the project has launched.
