There have already been some reports about major changes that might be introduced to the Call of Duty franchise with the next title in this series and the latest suggests that the developer is thinking about tapping into the growing popularity of the battle royale genre courtesy of games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. According to the report, the next Call of Duty game could have a battle royale mode.

The single-player campaign is often a highly anticipated addition to an upcoming title in the series and fans who have become very fond of this mode may not be pleased to hear that it’s expected that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 may not feature a single-player campaign.

It’s reportedly going to focus on a purely multiplayer experience which is one of the big reasons why titles like Call of Duty and Battlefield are very popular in the first place. Charlie Intel reports that word on the street even a month ago was that CoD: Black Ops 4 isn’t going to have a single-player campaign mode.

The title is expected to offer a battle royale mode instead which will provide an experience similar to what players get with Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. While it’s going to be a significant change, this won’t be the first time that a Call of Duty title hasn’t had a campaign mode. Black Ops 3 shipped with a campaign mode on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Activision hasn’t officially confirmed as yet if the reports about a battle royale mode are accurate. It’s set to unveil Black Ops 4 to the public come May 17th.
