We know that sometimes people like to get clever and cute with their WiFi names, but sometimes it gets taken too far. An example would be over in Saginaw, Michigan where according to a report, a Planet Fitness gym had to be evacuated and the authorities called in after a WiFi network named “remote detonator” was discovered.
The gym was alerted to the WiFi name after one of their patrons brought it to the manager’s attention. The manager then evacuated the building and called the police. A bomb-sniffing dog was also brought in to search for possible explosives while the gym remained closed for about 3 hours, but thankfully it seems that none were discovered.
Saginaw Township Police Chief Donald Pussehl is aware that people often have weird names for their WiFi networks and notes that there will be no legal repercussions. This is because it is considered as protected speech, which means that whoever was behind that network name will not be in any trouble.
That being said, this isn’t the first time “clever” WiFi names have caused a nuisance. Back in 2016 a flight had to be cancelled after someone decided to name their WiFi hotspot “Galaxy Note 7”, which at that time was a big deal due to reports of the phones exploding and catching on fire, and where it was banned from being brought on board flights.
