Over the years there have been plenty of chat apps designed for gaming, but in more recent times it’s starting to look like Discord could become the staple of chat and communications for gamers. This is evidenced in a recent development where according to an announcement on Major Nelson’s website, Xbox gamers can soon link their Discord accounts to their Xbox accounts.

According to the announcement, “In response to your feedback, you will now have the option to link your Discord account to your Xbox account, making it easier than ever to see what your friends are playing. If you are playing Sea of Thieves on your Xbox, you can now choose to give your Discord friends the ability to see that and decide whether they want to hop on their Xbox and join you.”

Note that this linking of accounts does not bring all of Discord’s features to the Xbox, such as voice chat. Instead it seems to be more of a social initiative where your friends can see what you are playing and join you. This is kind of disappointing since like we said, Discord has seemingly become the standard for communications amongst gamers, but either way this integration is still a huge step for the platform in terms of recognition.
