Back in October, Sonos announced that they would be supporting AirPlay 2 but were shy on some of the details, such as which speakers might be compatible with it. Now according to a report from The Mac Observer (via Engadget), it seems that only newer Sonos speakers will support it.

This includes the Sonos One, Sonos Play:5, and the Sonos Playbase. If you don’t own any of these speakers then we guess you’re out of luck with regards to AirPlay 2 support. However don’t despair because there will be support for AirPlay 2 for older speakers, but it will require you to own at least one of the new ones.

As Sonos does encourage its users to link its speakers up together for multiroom support, the workaround involves users linking the old speaker to a newer speaker that does have AirPlay 2 support. However like we said you will need to link them together, which means that if you’re trying to use AirPlay 2 with just the old speaker, then it won’t work.

That being said it is unclear when AirPlay 2 will arrive. Apple was expected to launch AirPlay 2 earlier this year along with the HomePod, but it seems that they have delayed it until later this year, which at the moment is still anyone’s guess as to when.
