Many are probably familiar with Sonos and their wireless speaker systems that let users link up multiple speakers together for a multiroom effect, and also let them stream from music services like Spotify directly. However Sonos could be branching out because in a report from Variety, an FCC filing has hinted at the company’s plans for a smart home theater system.

This is thanks to the filing that revealed the existence of a HDMI port which is usually featured for home theater systems as it would typically connect to the TV or a display. Sonos has declined to comment on the filing, only to say, “We are constantly looking at new ways to deliver the best possible experiences for our customers. We do not have any additional details to share.”

The filing reads in part, “The model S14 is a high-performance all-in-one home theater smart speaker and part of Sonos’ home sound system.” The mention of it being smart brings to mind digital assistants such as Alexa. It is unclear if Sonos will be integrating Alexa into the S14 or if they could use Google Assistant, or maybe both, but given that the Sonos One features Alexa support, the former does seem to be more likely.

It is unclear as to when Sonos might be launching their new speaker system, but it will be interesting to see what they might offer. As it stands the company already has several speaker products designed for TVs, so perhaps this new set of speakers could be an expansion of that, or it could be something on a larger scale for those who want a more premium experience.
