Google launched Android Pay in Japan back in 2016 and the company focused on creating a unique mobile checkout experience that was tailored to customers in the country. Google has improved the way customers pay using their mobile devices significantly since then and has also rebranded those efforts under the single Google Pay brand. Starting today, Google Pay users in Japan will find that it’s much easier to checkout online, in stores, and across the country with two new ways to pay.

Starting today, Google Pay in Japan can add and manage their Suica and WAON cards in the app if they live in Japan and have an Osaifu-Keitai eligible phone. What that means is that all four major prepaid e-money cards used in the country – nanaco, Rakuten Edy, Suica and WAON – can now be used with Google Pay.

Users will now be able to pay with Google Pay at the countless locations where these cards are accepted and will also be able to pay with the app on transit where Suica is accepted. The app can be used to sign up for e-money cards quickly with the information from the connected Google account as well. The app will let users check balances and add money to the cards with their credit cards. There’s also support for setting up low balance alerts.

Users who will rely on Google Pay for transit will be able to check their commuter pass, bullet train, and green ticket details while also being able to register their Tpoint and dPoint cards by scanning them from within the app.
