These days cameras are an important feature to consider when choosing a smartphone. For example users might readily ignore all other features of the phone in favor of the camera, or at least give it a high priority when making their choice. This is why it’s not surprising that Xiaomi wants to improve on that front.

In a report from MyDrivers (via PhoneArena), it seems that Xiaomi is looking to put together an in-house camera division. This is based on an alleged internal email sent by Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun who discusses the creation of a new department. It is unclear as to what exactly the company is hoping for in the creation of this new department, but it could be a way for them to set themselves apart and be known as more than just a budget smartphone brand.

A good example would be Huawei who is another Chinese company. Huawei has worked with camera companies such as Leica in recent years to create some impressive hardware for its smartphones, such as with the Huawei P20 which launched with a triple camera setup, making them the first smartphone maker to introduce such a setup.

Unfortunately there is no word on when we might see the fruits of Xiaomi’s labor, but if you are a fan of the company’s products, we suppose this is good news that they are looking to up their camera game.
