Couple Who Abused Amazon’s Return Policy Receive Jail Sentences

In case you haven’t been following the news, a while ago a couple from Indiana were caught scamming Amazon by abusing the company’s somewhat generous refund policy. What they did was they purchased a bunch of electronics from Amazon and later claimed that the products they received were damaged or stolen.

Amazon would then send replacements at no charge, in which the couple would then sell their purchases to another person, who would then sell them to an unnamed agent in New York. All actions have consequences and for the couple, Erin Joseph Finan and Leah Jeanette Finan, they have since been sentenced to jail where they will serve 71 months and 68 months respectively on charges of federal mail fraud and money laundering.

Their partner in crime, 29-year-old Indianapolis resident Danijel Glumac, has pleaded to money laundering and fencing and was issued a 24 month prison sentence. In a statement made by US Attorney Josh Minkler, “Consumer fraud not only unjustly enriches the perpetrator, it causes all of us to pay higher retail prices. To those who seek to exploit the convenience of online shopping through fraud, remember this case. You will be caught. You will be prosecuted. And you will go to federal prison for a long time.”

As you might have heard, Amazon has since tightened up on their return policy where they will now be banning customers who make frequent return orders.
