Samsung introduced the iris scanner with the Galaxy S8 a couple of years ago and kept the component for the Galaxy S9 as well. However, if a new report is to be believed, Samsung might ditch the iris scanner for the Galaxy S10. The company’s new flagship smartphone is due early next year and it may not have an iris scanner due to the display-based fingerprint sensor.

Several reports over the past few months have also claimed that the Galaxy S10 is going to have a 3D facial recognition module as well. The module will enable the company to offer a more secure facial recognition feature which coupled with the display-based fingerprint sensor will essentially make the iris scanner redundant.

It has long been rumored that Samsung is going to introduce a display-based fingerprint sensor with its flagship smartphones but the company hasn’t done that as yet. Some reports have even suggested that the Galaxy Note 9 might feature it but chances are that the company will hold off on this technology until the Galaxy S10 next year.

The possibility exists, though, that the Galaxy S10 may retain the iris scanner is Samsung is unable to get the 3D scanning module ready in time for the Galaxy S10. Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything about its new flagship smartphone at this point in time so it would be best to take these reports with a grain of salt.
