While wireless charging has become rather common in smartphones, Google for some reason has decided to not include it in its Pixel lineup of phones. However could the company be changing their mind with the Pixel 3? According to the folks at XDA, it seems that there is a possibility that they might.

According to the report, they point towards a set of leaked photos of the Pixel 3 which according to one of the XDA forum members, features a glass back. This means that there is a chance that the Pixel 3 could have wireless charging. However the use of a glass back could simply be for aesthetic purposes but in the latest Android P Developer Preview, XDA also found some code that hints at the feature.

Within the code, there is clear reference to terms such as “wireless charger” and also “dock”, indicating that there is a possibility that the Pixel 3 could launch with a wireless charging dock. They also point towards mention of an app codenamed “dreamliner”, which upon further inspection and expansion has revealed more references made to docks and wireless chargers.

However as XDA notes, it seems that Google is testing this out internally. Coupled with the claims that the device pictured in the leak is a prototype of the Pixel 3, it could very well mean that Google is testing out wireless charging with a prototype Pixel 3 which may or may not make the final cut. Take it with a grain of salt, but if you’re hoping for a wireless charging-enabled Pixel handset, this could be your year.
