Spotify Registers With The FCC, Fuels Smart Speaker Rumors

The FCC is usually the place that companies who want to sell hardware in the US will have to visit first before their products can be sold. Given that Spotify is a service provider that specializes in music streaming, it does seem odd that the company would have registered themselves with the FCC.

This was actually spotted by Variety in which it appears that Spotify has registered themselves with the agency. Why, you ask? For those who haven’t been following the news, there are rumors to suggest that Spotify could be working on its own smart speaker. We’ve seen this in job listings and heard it in rumors, so for Spotify to register themselves with the FCC is only adding fuel to the fire.

Of course it could be nothing and it could be Spotify just trying to cover their bases, but given that smart speakers are touted to be the next big thing in tech, it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that Spotify would want in on the action. Plus it could appeal to the company’s subscribers who wouldn’t mind a set of dedicated speakers that could stream Spotify directly.

There are several speakers that offer up such features, such as Sonos, so we’re not sure what Spotify could possibly do to compete with them. Either way we’ll find out at some point in time, although when exactly is anyone’s guess.
