Apple’s products have never been known to be cheap/affordable, and neither are their official accessories. This is why when we heard the rumors that the AirPower wireless charging mat could be priced at $200, we can’t say that we were surprised. However according to a new report from Chongdiantou (via Cult of Mac), it could be cheaper than that.

The report claims that Apple will charge $150 for the AirPower. This makes it $50 cheaper than the previously rumored price. However it also means that compared to the competition, it is also more expensive, but there could be a reason behind why it is more expensive. Apart from branding, it seems that the tech involved in the AirPower is slightly more sophisticated compared to the others.

Apparently for its design, Apple decided to equip the AirPower with 22 charging coils, and where each coil is isolated and tiled so that they don’t overlap, which also allows the entire mat’s surface to wirelessly charge devices placed on it. One coil is also said to be good enough to charge an Apple Watch.

The AirPower’s launch has been delayed from last year apparently due to overheating issues. However we have heard that the AirPower could be getting close to being ready as rumor has it that Apple might officially announce it alongside 2018’s iPhones which are rumored to take place in September.
