Now that Apple has ditched the home button for the iPhone and is expected to do that for future models moving forwards, we can imagine that the same will eventually be done to the iPad. However when exactly that will happen remains to be seen, but could that future be closer than we think?

According to a recent discovery in the iOS 12 beta by 9to5Mac, it seems that Apple has included a new icon in which it shows off an iPad with slimmer bezels and no home button. As you can see in the image above, the old icon clearly shows the home button along with thicker top and bottom bezels, whereas the new icon on the right shows off a new design.

9to5Mac points out that the icon seems to be lacking a notch which we suppose makes sense. The iPad is bigger than the iPhone which means that it is possible that its bezels could be shrunk enough to give it an edgeless look, but yet be thick enough to house the necessary components of a front-facing camera and the TrueDepth camera system for Face ID.

Apple is expected to launch updated iPads this year but whether or not this is the year we can expect major design changes remains to be seen. Until then maybe don’t get your hopes up just yet for a bezel-less iPad.
