apple-watch-milanese-stone-leatherThe idea of wearables is a good one. It’s a compelling one too. After all who wouldn’t mind being able to receive their messages on their wrist without having to constantly check their phone? It’s also a good thing for fitness enthusiasts who love to see how many calories they’ve burnt, the distance they’ve run, steps climbed, and so on.

However is the love for wearables a long-lasting one? Well apparently not. According to retail tracking firm GfK, it has been discovered that one third of wearable buyers tend to discard their device inside of six months after purchasing it. The survey conducted included 1,000 people and found that one of the reasons why people abandon their wearables is because they don’t see long-term benefits from using it.

Some also abandon them because they did not intend to own one in the first place but they did because it was thrown in with the purchase of another device. That being said, it’s not all doom and gloom. According to Eric Micigovsky, CEO of Pebble, it seems that while many users got the smartwatch to check for notifications at the start, along the way they started to discover more uses for the watch.

Speaking to the Guardian, “At the beginning [of getting a Pebble] people tend to use it just for notifications and the changeable watchfaces. But then they explore our app store and add other features, like controlling lights and thermostats – there’s even a Guardian app.” GfK’s study also found that price was one of first things people looked at before considering their purchase.

The survey also discovered that 33% of those surveyed preferred their wearables as a bracelet, while 26% preferred them on their shoes. This was broken down into gender as well where men preferred wearables on shirts, shoes, or belts, while women favored necklaces, bracelets, and rings.
