For naysayers of the Earth Hour effort in which it intends to raise awareness of cutting back energy use but happens only once a year, here’s an example that proves a campaign as such works. The Tidy Street Project shows off that transparent and prominent feedback loops are able to result in a positive behavior change. The project organizers decided to enlist the help of residents for them to manually record their energy usage before putting it online, in order to have a more direct impact o the participant. After that, you can compare your data against averages on the street and in the town as well, and you can only see data from your own household instead of others due to privacy concerns and not turning it into some sort of competition. In fact, this approach has seen energy use slashed by 15% in a mere three weeks – while some households managed to hit 30% cuts. Now that’s being proactive in saving the planet!
