There are many programs which are configured to automatically startup when the PC boots. Although, this makes it easy to access these programs directly, but they also eat up resources and slow boot up process.

Some of these programs are hidden and some are mostly located in the System tray (at the bottom right corner of the screen). These programs mostly include, Antivirus programs, Productivity programs, Updaters and torrent applications.

Disabling all these programs might not be a good idea either, as some of the programs are quite important for the system to work properly, such as Antivirus Programs, so be careful about what you disable.

In this tutorial, we are going to show you how you can disable startup programs using different methods.

Note: Some of these programs might not be disabled with the below mentioned methods. If you would like to disable them, then go to the program’s Settings and from there look for the option where it says “don’t start this program on Boot” and disable it. The name of the option may vary from program to program, but the meaning will be same.

Method #1: Use MSconfig to Disable Startup Programs

You can disable all startup programs in bulk from the system configuration dialog.

To access System configuration, press Windows+R to open “Run” program (you can also access “Run” from Start menu). In the “Run”, type “msconfig” and click on “OK”. This will open “System Configuration” window.

Warning: If you don’t know what you are doing, then don’t change any of the settings in System configuration. Changing options in this window may negatively affect your PC. For example, you might force your PC to “Always” Boot in Safe mode, which can be quite a sticky situation if you don’t know how to get out.

Now, click on “Startup” tab and you will be able to see all programs that startup while the PC boots. Here you can uncheck any program that you don’t want to start when the PC boots.

You also have the option to click on “Disable all” to disable all of the programs from the startup, but this option is not recommended as it might also disable an important program.

When you have disabled programs, then just click on “OK” to apply changes. You might be prompted to restart your PC, just restart or restart later if you are not ready. The changes will be applied when the PC will restart.

Method #2: Use CCleaner to Disable Startup programs

You can also use the Free utility program CCleaner by Piriform to disable startup programs. The program is basically used for cleaning a PC and boosting performance, and it comes with some reliable utility tools including managing startup programs.

The list of startup programs CCleaner tool offers is more extensive than the one in the System configuration of Windows. It will sort the startup programs from not only Windows, but browsers as well. If you want to disable more startup programs and startup programs of browsers as well, then using CCleaner is a better option.

Download the CCleaner program and launch it. In the interface, click on “Tools” from the menu located on the left side of the window.

Many different tools will be opened, in there, click on “Startup” and all startup programs will be displayed.
