Smaller iPhone Coming To Verizon?
Story posted on: November 7, 2009

We haven’t heard an “iPhone Mini” rumor in a while, so the rumor mill has probably decided that it’s time to kickstart things again. According to the latest whispers, it seems that Apple has signed contracts to produce a UMTS/CDMA hybrid iPhone, which is planned to be released in Q3 of 2010. Based on the rumor, the phone will be built around a dual-system chip from Qualcomm, allowing this “iPhone Mini” to run on virtually any GSM/UMTS cellular network worldwide, and also on the CDMA2000 networks. Verizon has been said to be the target carrier of this new device. Further details include a manufacturer will be Pegatron, a subsidiary of Asustek, instead of Foxconn, which is currently the sole-source provider of iPhone hardware. Last but not least, the display is said to be 2.8-inches, making it smaller than the current 3.5-inch display in the current iPhone. Will this turn out to be true? We certainly wouldn’t mind.

Uber10: the greatest gifts, coming up on November 12
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

Yes, it's that time of the year again (we can't believe it!). Soon, you will run around wondering what to get for your loved ones -probably at the last minute. We can help by suggesting the 10 greatest gifts (under $500) for this holiday season. They are called the “Uber10&rdquo. Please help us select an 11th gift by voting on an extended list (coming any day now).
The Uber10 will be unveiled in a private event in San Francisco on November 12, thanks to our Platinum Sponsor Dolby and Gold Sponsor Intel. Dolby will build a surround sound setup at the event venue to show us what the Dolby Surround Sound Experience is all about. You may be able to experience it for yourself, if the Dolby Truck stops by your town. Check out the cool Dolby videos on Youtube.
Intel will talk about the new Intel Sponsors of Tomorrow campaign and their hilarious "rock star" videos: "Intel Star" TV ad and Intel's "Big Ideas" TV ad
At the private event in San Francisco, both sponsors will demonstrate the coolest gadgets with their latest embedded technology.
Check out the 2007 and 2008 Uber10 lists, This 2009 edition will be published at ubergizmo.com/uber10
We have a few extra tickets for the private event, go to this discussion page on our Facebook Fan page to know how you can get one.
Editor's note: this seems obvious, but we would like to make it clear that companies with products nominated to the Uber10 cannot be accepted as sponsors of the Uber10 event.
Nvidia fighting Intel with...humor?
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

I had to scratch my eyes a couple of times, but NVIDIA has built a parody website called intelsinsides.com (yes it's been confirmed that Nvidia owns the site). I don't think that Intel will laugh, but I wonder how they will react to that. Who’s next? Qualcomm? Marvell? Broadcom? AMD?
Microsoft demonstrates glass interface
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

Microsoft chief research officer Craig Mundie recently demonstrated an extremely interesting concept that could be part of a future computing interface during his college tour. While this concept supports the use of pens for precise input, the transparent glass display is also more than capable of recognizing voices and detecting touch-free gestures, pretty much in the same vein as the Xbox 360's soon-to-happen Project Natal. Apart from that, this system is smart enough to detect a pair of eyes and navigate based on one's gaze - guess the physically impaired will find this infinitely more useful when using a computer.
Witstech A81 tablet
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

Here's another tablet that might just pique your interest if you're into devices like these - the Witstech A81 tablet. This 7" ARM-powered tablet will most probably fall under the WinCE category, but we're pleased to note that it comes with a capacitive touchscreen display while running on an unidentified ARM Cortex A8 core. No idea on pricing, but a range of $200 to $250 has been bandied about alongside a future Android build.
Barnes & Noble gift card does not work with eBooks
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

Some guy known as Dave had a Nook pre-ordered for him from the local Barnes & Noble store, picking up a $100 gift card in the process to kickstart the eBook collection. Unfortunately, when the bloke tried to buy a few books virtually, he realized that the gift card was useless, and this without having the staff at Barnes & Noble inform him earlier. Hopefully not too many people will suffer the same fate this holiday season.
LG rely on Snapdragon processor
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

LG is currently working on a new phone that will be powered by the Snapdragon processor while running on Google's Android operating system. No idea on further details, but we do know that this handset will roll out in South Korea first (as with most other cool handsets), although for that to happen, you still gotta wait till the second quarter of 2010. This will be the second Android attempt from LG as their first was known as Etna, a QWERTY slider.
802.11n access point arrives at the FCC
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

Our friends at the FCC have gotten their mittens on a new AN0100 802.11n AP, and although there is no instruction manual available or whether this is the crucial missing link required for streaming networked media to the TV via a TiVo set, we're totally amazed by the sheer size of this thing, or rather, the lack of it. After all, just take a look at it on your right and pinch yourself. It hurts, yes?
Asus O! Play Media Player
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

The Asus O! Play Media Player is finally here, where it is also known more formally as the O!Play Air HDP-R3. It will come with a minor upgrade as Asus has thrown in 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity alongside a multiple memory card reader for greater file playback options. With an HDMI 1.3 port, you ought to be able to use the O! Play HDP-R3 to handle just about any file format available currently, regardless of how obscure some of them are. Expect to fork out approximately €90 for this bad boy.
Q-TV2 speaker system offers thumping sounds
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

Want your TV to pump out tubthumping audio each time, and yet you want to keep your living room clean and free? The Q-TV2 speaker system ought to come in handy, as this offering from Q Acoustics is strapped onto the back of your flat panel TV, offering true 2.1 stereo sound which ought to surpass most vanilla flat panels. It can be plugged into your TV’s optical, RCA or headphone jack, depending on your preference. The Q-TV2 speaker system will add around 38mm more depth to your TV set. A slim vibration-free subwoofer will remain at the back of your display, where it is powered by a 50W amp while both satellites come with swivel mounts for easy adjustment. Expect to fork out £299.99 for the Q-TV2 speaker system.
Rogers could carry HTC Touch2
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

Rogers Wireless of Canada could very well be the first mobile carrier in North America to make the HTC Touch2 available to the masses, at least that's what some sources have pointed out. Word also has it that this Windows Mobile 6.5-powered smartphone will also feature several colors that won't be considered normal for the handset. There is still no word on pricing or a launch date, so do stay tuned.
LTE Connected Car Of The Future
Story posted on: November 6, 2009

Ever wondering how your car could become more high-tech, without having to be turned into a time-travelling DeLorean? Well, a partnership between tech companies and content providers are cooking up the idea of a prototype “LTE Connected Car”. This car would basically sport 4G mobile broadband connectivity, along with a bunch of cloud-facilities, like video-on-demand, audio libraries and online gaming. In effect, your car could turn into a Wi-Fi hotspot, which is quite an appealing idea. It seems that the Toyota Prius has been selected as the test model for such a setup. Press release can be found here.
Gigabyte Booktop M1305 gets docking station
Story posted on: November 6, 2009
Gigabyte's Booktop M1305 might not be something vastly different from the rest of standard spec notebooks with its Intel Core 2 Duo processor and integrated graphics chipset, but when you dock it onto its very own docking station, this is where things heat up. After all, the M1305 will be able to take full advantage of the discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT220 GPU that is packed into the docking station, turning your once docile Booktop M1305 into a gaming machine.
