AMD ATI Radeon HD5450 graphics card

AMD outs its latest ATI Radeon HD5450 graphics card, being the most affordable DirectX 11 (and OpenGL 3.2) solution in the market as at press time, retailing for no more than $60 a pop. Despite that highly affordable price point, the ATI Radeon HD 5450 has enough muscle to support similar visual effects as with the 5600 and 5800 lines, although you get lesser stream processors at 80, alongside 8 texture units and a 650MHz engine clock speed. Thanks to the lower clock speed, temperatures won't rise up that fast, resulting in a low-speed fan that won't create a din whenever it is in use. Those who use a slightly larger chassis might want to take the fanless route for a change. Other features include Eyefinity support, dual-link DVI, DisplayPort and VGA. [Press Release]

AMD unveils ATI Radeon E4690 Mobile PCI Express module

AMD has lifted the curtains on its ATI Radeon E4690 Mobile PCI Express module which will target graphics-intensive embedded systems. Boasting compliance to the industry-standard MXM 3.0 specification for graphics subsystems, you will find that the Radeon E4690 features reduced power consumption, improved cooling capability and a lower z-height which makes the tasks of designers to create smaller, more efficient embedded systems a whole lot easier. The ATI Radeon E4690 MXM will come with thrice the 3D graphics performance of older solutions, featuring low CPU utilization and brilliant picture quality. It will come with 512MB GDDR3 RAM and is proud to be the sole graphics chip that supports Microsoft DirectX 10.1 and AMD’s Unified Video Decoder 2 (UVD 2). Do bear in mind that gamers are not the target market for this. [Press Release]

Intel To Offer Larrabee At Preferential Prices?

If you’re interested in computer graphics, you’ll certainly have heard of Intel’s upcoming high-end Larrabee GPU. Sources online claim that Intel is planning to offer preferential pricing for the GPU on its own, as well as bundled with other Intel products. Scheduled to be launched in 2010, Larrabee will most likely directly compete with NVIDIA’s GeForce and AMD’s Radeon graphic cards. Will Larrabee put genuine pressure on NVIDIA and AMD/ATI, or will it still be a two horse race?

AMD Radeon HD 5970 video card leaked

The AMD Radeon HD 5970 video card has been leaked out without any official announcement just yet, although there is an image of it as shown above. This video card was reportedly supposed to be the HD 5870X2 originally, where the HD 5850X2 will most probably be called the HD 5950 in the end. Word also has it that the HD 5970 will come with a massive 13.5" PCB, accompanied by a single fan with rotational speed of 4700RPM, and an 8-pin and one 6-pin power connector.

Acer Aspire 5738DG does Stereo 3D

This new Acer laptop might not have the sexiest name ever, but it was designed to entertain using the new fashionable feature (for manufacturers) in consumer electronics: stereo 3D. Using its ATI Radeon 4570, a stereo-friendly display and a pair of special glasses, the computer will trick you into thinking that things pop out of the screen. There's also a TriDef Media Player that converts content like photos from 2D to stereo 3D. If you want to look at the more "classic: abilities of this laptop, check the highlights in the full post.

ATI To Power Next-gen Xbox?

There isn’t anything official on this just yet, but if our sources around the Internet are to be believed, it seems that AMD/ATI has already got the deal to power the next-generation Xbox console. This probably shows that Microsoft is satisfied with what it’s gotten from ATI so far, not to mention the new ATI GPU should help keep compatibility with legacy games. While a new Xbox was suggested to be available in 2010, it seems that it will be pushed back to 2012, so we’ll have to be patient on this.

ATI 5870 X2 leaked

ATI 5870 X2 leaked

AMD's ATI 5870 X2 video card has leaked out recently, where this dual-GPU behemoth will take up the space of two PCI-E slots while sipping juice from a secondary power source, measuring a good foot long thereabouts. It would be interesting to see what kind of system will utilize this card, alongside a new chassis and a carefully selected motherboard. We do scratch our heads when we see HDMI out missing on the ATI 5870 X2, but in hindsight it might make sense - after all, folks who purchase this will be pure enthusiasts through and through, and this group will more or less own a separate video card and sound system.

The ATI Radeon HD 5800 is the fastest GPU in town

The ATI Radeon HD 5800 is the fastest GPU in town

The Next generation AMD GPU has arrived: The ATI Radeon HD 5870 should have been called Radeon 2X: when compared to the Radeon HD 4890, It has twice the number of stream processors, twice the transistors, twice the texture and pixel blending power and is worth twice as much... The theoretical numbers are impressive, and actual numbers are too. It is as fast as the GeForce GTX 295 that has two GPUs. If you have the choice, a single GPU solution is always better than a dual-GPU solution that has the same level of performance. Combine the Radeon 5870 speed with a price of $379 and you get a very compelling offering from AMD. That's not it: did we mention that this is the only DX11 GPU on the market?

By any metrics, this is the best high-end graphics card today.

Lucid offers a multi-GPU alternative to SLI and CrossFire

Lucid offers a multi-GPU alternative to SLI and CrossFire

[IDF 2009, SF] Lucid's Hydra Engine is a hardware solution (a chip) that brings multi-GPU functionality to motherboards, without having to use Nvidia's SLI or AMD's CrossFire. Usually, there is a lot of work done in the GPU driver, but Lucid has found a way to use many GPUs without asking Nvidia or AMD for help.

They declined to give me all the details (even though they have 50 patents or so filed), but they said that the high-level idea is that objects from the scene are routed and rendered on different GPUs. We're talking about individual geometry elements here, not tiles or frames. Somehow, Lucid manages to re-assemble a final image that looks just like one that has been rendered on a single-GPU system.

AMD EyeFinity paraded

AMD EyeFinity paraded

AMD just took their soon-to-be Radeon HD 5800 series graphics chipset out for a spin, where it is also known as Eyefinity. They hooked up the ATI-branded technology video card to half a dozen DisplayPort outputs that were running at their full resolution, merging all six into a solitary image to hit a phenomenal live image that is 8,192 x 8,192 pixels large, compared to current technology that results in a lesser 7,680 x 3,200 image resolution. This modular technique also allows users to rearrange the number of discrete images created in addition to their shape according to your liking. Gamers will no doubt find this setup to their liking, and it would be interesting to see just what kind of living room you have if you were to employ such a configuration.

ATI FirePro V8750 hits 2GB mark

ATI FirePro V8750 Hits 2GB Mark

ATI pooh poohs whatever economic crisis that the world is going through now by offering their latest graphics card, where it will cost a whopping $1,800 thereabouts. Of course, at that price, you would definitely have pretty high expectations of this, and we're pretty interested to see whether ATI fulfils those expectations or not. Targeting the workstation crowd, this GPU will boast the highest number of shader engines (800) with the highest memory bandwidth (115.2 GB/s) in the entire 3D professional graphics offerings today, enabling professionals to render incredibly complex models and photo-realistic images in real-time. Boasting a whopping 2GB of memory, you can be sure that its rivals are currently eating the trail of dust the FirePro V8750 left behind. [Press Release]

Publisher's note: "Pro" GPUs typically use a hardware that is very close to consumer cards. The difference is mostly found in the OpenGL driver, which has more app-specific optimizations. Also the 2GB is important because CAD users display massive amounts of geometry or volumetric textures.
