Nintendo DSi LL hits Japan
Posted on November 23, 2009 3:32 AM

Nintendo's DSi LL has arrived in Japan yesterday, and by the time the Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara opened, there were around 100 people lined up. Looks like we could see the Sony PSP-3000 and PS3 both move down a notch from first and second places in the weekly Japanese hardware sales charts next week as the DSi LL helps Nintendo leapfrog to first place. Could this introduction also push the PS2 out of the sales charts since there would be 3 iterations of the DS then? As for those living in Europe and US, we'll have to wait until 2010.

Posted on November 23, 2009 3:05 AM

Nice to know that the latest firmware update 6.20 for the Sony PSP will introduce an additional column in the XMB called “Extras.” Under this column lies the “Digital Comics” category that will kick off in December when Sony starts to roll out digital comic books via the Playstation Store. Alongside that addition to encourage little ones to read more, Sony also increased the potency of their compatibility with Media Go software, enabling users to view videos and listen to audio playlists created within Media Go.
Sega Dreamcast made portable
Posted on November 23, 2009 2:02 AM

This isn't the first (but it might be the last, who knows?) Sega Dreamcast developed, but it does look pretty stunning. You get clean and compact styling, where it packs in a 7" widescreen display, an integrated controller and stereo speakers. Too bad such DIY projects will never hit the market...

Posted on November 22, 2009 8:42 AM

Considering that there are text messaging championships around the world, we should know that quite a few people take their text messaging speed seriously. So the next time you’re in the arcade looking for something to play, don’t be surprised if you see the Textminator, which is a coin-operated arcade that lets you put your texting skills to the test. Featuring “arcade” and “race the clock” game modes, as well as single player or 2 player modes, this arcade machine with its 26-inch monitor looks like unique. In place of your traditional joysticks is a toy cell phone, which is interesting. Now, we wonder whether the toy cell phone uses a numeric keypad or a QWERTY keyboard.

Are game controllers getting all weird or what - the Blobo squeezable game controller shares roughly the same dimensions as that of a golf ball, where it will keep in touch with your PC or cellphone via Bluetooth. Each purchase will come with half a dozen sports games, where it can track whether you are running, jumping, dribbling or karate chop-ping your time away. Don't think that this €54.90 device will be a Christmas mover.

Gameloft to slow down on Android games
Posted on November 20, 2009 6:37 AM

Gameloft is famous for their range of mobile games, but they have just revealed that they will be slowing down on Android game development due to a lack of potential revenue and slow adoption of the platform. According to Gameloft finance director Alexandre de Rochefort, “We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like … many others. It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue.” Oh, is this a big blow to Android as we all know that games do sell hardware. Would this result in a snowball effect for buying more iPhones?

Sony Turnaround Plan: We see 3-D as a pillar of our strategy
Posted on November 19, 2009 12:35 AM

Sony is still working very hard to turn a profit. To do so, the company is betting on (stereo) 3D, among other things, to charge a premium, in a bid to increase its margins. This was largely visible during our recent trip to CEATEC in Japan: stereo 3D was everywhere, in TVs, but also in the PS3 graphics driver itself. With it, Sony can turn the PS3 (an Uber10) user interface and most games into "3D Stereo" games. So what's in it for Sony? Sell more expensive TVs, for one.
It is not surprising to see Hollywood and TV makers are pushing (stereo) "3D". While customers have sometimes been willing to pay an extra to go from 60Hz to 120HZ, I doubt that the same is true for 240Hz. Thinness is also worth only so much: when it comes down to it, customers aren't willing to pay twice the price to get half the thickness. Instead most will patiently wait until the prices fall into the 1500-2000 range.

Origin - yet another gamer PC company?
Posted on November 17, 2009 10:16 AM

Origin PC, a new player in the world of gaming PC companies has a slight edge over the rest if history is taken into consideration - after all, it is started by former executives of Alienware. Bringing along a similar idealogy where it will target hardcore PC gamers who want machines that have tons of custom options and airbrush paint jobs. Apart from that, these machines will boast “overclocking” guarantees thanks to liquid cooling that enables the PC’s microprocessor to function at much higher speeds than normal. Could they pull it off? Perhaps, if their operations are kept lean.

Sega Genesis emulator on PSPGo
Posted on November 13, 2009 8:43 AM
The Sony PSPGo hasn't exactly broken sales charts to date, but that doesn't mean it does not deserve good things coming its way. The Sony handheld console has been hacked to make it more likeable, where it now features a Sega Genesis emulator that ought to rock the socks off folks who grew up on a steady diet of 16-bit gaming and uncensored finishing moves in the original Mortal Kombat.
Xbox 360 console ban is irreversible
Posted on November 12, 2009 9:24 AM

Xbox 360 owners who found themselves cut off from Microsoft's Xbox Live service are on the path of no return as they will need to purchase a whole new console if they ever want to get their online action back again. According to Microsoft, banned machines will be permanently barred and "unable to connect to Xbox Live" as affected consoles do not have any recourse for terms of use violations. This amounts up to a million gamers missing out from Xbox Live - yes, that many people have modified their consoles to handle pirated games.
PSP Go undergoes survey for new colors
Posted on November 12, 2009 8:17 AM

Nintendo is the master when it comes to introducing new colors for the same handheld, selling millions of units in the process. This is a fact that is not lost on Sony so far, with the Japanese company conducting a survey on the type of colors one would like the PSP Go to come in, hopefully to add to the current Piano Black and Pearl White systems once the survey is done. Variety, after all, is the spice of life.
OutRun arcade cabinet turned into car
Posted on November 11, 2009 11:57 AM

Truth might be stranger than fiction, and this adage holds true with the OutRun arcade cabinet that has been transformed into a car thanks to Garnet Hertz of the Pasadena Art Center College of Design. He has already installed all the relevant parts including wheels and motors to keep it up and running. An EVT America Electric Trike with electric motors will move the entire arcade cabinet with its "driver", while GPS sensors from an iPhone will be work in tandem with custom software to render out a "map" on the arcade screen in an OutRun style.

Word has it that Microsoft's Project Natal will be rolling out earlier than expected, where 5 million manufactured Natals would be prepared for a worldwide launch in November 2010, where some of them will be standalone releases while others will come in Xbox 360 bundles. The price could be the sore thumb here, where numerous meetings among Microsoft executives have not decided on a concrete price point just yet, leaving it to hover between $50 and $80 alongside 14 bundled games. How much are you willing to fork out for Project Natal when it arrives?

Posted on November 10, 2009 7:34 PM

At long last after several false starts, the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter is set to arrive in North America sometime this week, shipping for $80 a pop while stocks last. No idea on whether this is going to be a hot seller and fly off the shelves or not, but with support for the 802.11n protocol, you ought to be able to enjoy much faster wireless connections. Apart from that, a second antenna has been thrown into the fray for symmetrical purposes.
