Garmin Ltd. was incorporated in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. It was founded by Gary Burrell and Min Kao in 1989, hence the company name Garmin. Garmin specializes in developing consumer, aviation, and marine technologies that rely on Global Positioning System or GPS for navigational assistance. Burrell and Kao, both electrical engineers, first named the company ProNav, but opted to change it to Garmin in 1991 when another competitor, who had a product called NavPro, sued the company for trademark infringement. Today, Garmin has more than 9,200 associates in 35 offices worldwide.
