01/20/2010, Do you long for the “good old days” where VHS tapes were common? While you probably won’t be buying VHS tapes today, nobody is going to stop you from buying these VHS tapes that have a 2.5-inch hard drive inside, turning it into a rather cool looking portable hard drive. It’s available in 320GB($105), 500GB($125) and 640GB($155) sizes, and if you have a specific movie you want, they’ll make one […]
01/08/2010, Samsung has announced its line of stylish and rugged hard drives at CES 2010. You’ll be able to pick them up in 3 different physical sizes, 1.8”, 2.5” and 3.5”. The drive should be tough enough for it to survive drops and also getting liquids spilt on top of it. The G2 portable will be offering hard drive sizes from 250GB to 640GB, whilst the G3 station will be offering […]
01/05/2010, [CES 2010] Seagate introduces yet another peripheral for notebook owners with their blazing fast BlackArmor PS110 USB 3.0 portable hard drive performance kit which packs in a 500GB 7200RPM 2.5″ portable hard drive, its power cable and PC express card (for those who don’t have a USB 3.0 port in their laptop) in order to deliver up to triple the speed of its USB 2.0 predecessor. This automatically places it […]
12/29/2009, Could Seagate be in some rather hot soup over hard drive silencing technology? It certainly seems the case, as an ex-Seagate employee is claiming that the company stole the technology from the MIT researchers (violating an NDA), and also destroyed the blueprints in order to hide the evidence. It may (or may not) surprise you, but this case has spanned a decade, and it will certainly be interesting to see […]
12/14/2009, This just in – the Seagate Momentus Thin is finally announced on an official basis by the folks at Seagate, and as we promised, here are more details about this 7mm thin 2.5″ hard drive which is the slimmest of its kind in the market. It will come in 160GB and 250GB capacities, where we hope to see it in action in a range of ultra portable machines and netbooks […]
12/12/2009, Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, it seems that we can never have enough storage space on our computers, and as such, it’s great news to hear that Western Digital has developed a technique that will provide us with more usable space out of a given hard drive capacity. The technique, called Advanced Format, will give between 7 to 11 percent increase in usable storage, which is great. This […]
12/09/2009, Ah, progress. Everyone loves it, except maybe for nature as she gets polluted. We digress though with Seagate’s latest super slim hard drive that ought to see action in equally thin notebooks and netbooks of the future. The 2.5″ Momentus Thin measures a mere 7mm in thickness, which shaves off 2.5mm from the average hard drives found in netbooks. No idea on the capacities available with the Momentus Thin series, […]
11/23/2009, We all know that hard drives are prone to failure, especially if you’re unlucky enough to drop the drive. Now pqi’s H560 Ultra Shock Proof Hard Drive attempts to ease your fears by making sure it can withstand military standard drop tests. The 2.5-inch SATA drive inside will be connected to your PC via USB 2.0, and the drive is available in 320, 500 and 640GB sizes. The 500GB will […]
11/19/2009, Imation has officially started shipping what it dubs as “the world’s first Wireless USB external hard drive”, which is the Imation Pro WX Wireless USB Hard Drive. It’s basically a 1.5TB hard drive, which will connect to your computer via a special wireless USB connector. At $450, it’s certainly pricey, and the fact that you’ll need a special USB connector on your laptop somehow makes it seem less cool. That […]
10/19/2009, Dane-Elec has just announced its new range of So SuperSpeed hard drives and SSDs which will play nice with the soon-to-come USB 3.0 standard. These drives are capable of hitting a phenomenal speed of 250MBps which is around ten times the rate of USB 2.0 connectivity, where you can choose from capacities ranging from 500GB to 2TB for the hard drive while the SSDs will come in 80GB and 160GB […]
10/12/2009, The Ikkoichi 2.5” aluminum hard drive enclosure offers the flair of having a couple of FireWire 400 ports for speedier data transfer, alongside a USB 2.0 port and support for SATA 2.5″ hard drives, knowing that its predecessor that supported only IDE hard drives made it hard to fill since those types of hard drives are pretty much extinct these days. Kudos to Century for keeping up with the times.
10/02/2009, The Mercury On-The-Go Pro 1TB hard drive is the first of its kind, since it relies on a 2.5″ configuration instead of the standard 3.5″ at that size. There is one drawback with all that space though – you would have to be a very patient person since it runs on 5200RPM, which is a pretty sluggish number even for hard drives. For those who want a faster interface, they’ll […]
09/25/2009, Want to add an image stabilization feature to your camera? If you’re willing to take some time to build one, you could follow the instructions over at Instructables and build your own gyroscopic image stabilizer. It certainly doesn’t look like something for the faint-hearted, but it certainly looks worth the time investment, don’t you think?
09/21/2009, The latest 2TB Seagate Barracuda XT hard drive will benefit from a 6Gbps SATA interface that offers double the theoretical bandwidth of existing SATA II drives, giving you the ability to enjoy up to 600MBps in burst transfers. In real life though, the drive blazes at 140MBps where sustained transfer rate is concerned, partly aided by Seagate’s use of 64MB of onboard cache for a mainstream drive. Folks who have […]
