Posted on March 4, 2010 9:36 AM

Just when you thought that home phones are all but extinct these days, along comes DSP Group with a new cordless home phone that boasts the functionalities of an interactive multimedia handset. Powered by the Android OS, this handset is equipped with a user-friendly touchscreen display and a virtual keyboard to get you started, letting you access a wide range of Android apps right from the comfort of your own home. Neat, but we don't think it will usher in a renaissance of home phones anytime soon.
Motorola HS1001 home phone
Posted on March 3, 2010 8:59 PM

Fast forward a generation or two, and chances are kids will be able to see what a house phone looks like at a museum. Even in this day and age, most homes have already phased out home phones simply because they are impractical, and the cost of ownership for cellphones have dropped to crazy affordable levels. The Motorola HS1001 home phone aims to buck the trend, being one of the first few Android-powered handsets to hit the home phone market. You won't find Android 2.1 with this though, since it runs only on Android 1.6 while featuring a 2.8" touchscreen display with a virtual keypad and Wi-Fi connectivity. Unfortunately, there is no Marketplace support for the HS1001, but this DECT 6.0 handset does boast a “full spectrum of multimedia applications,” video and features common to top of the line smartphones. You also get a built-in speaker in its base station, letting you enjoy tunes played back on it when docked. Expect the Motorola HS1001 to hit the US market sometime in Q3 this year for approximately $150.
trueCall lets you talk only to people you know

[CES 2010] Picture this - how many times have you sat down with the rest of your family to enjoy a nice meal after a long day at the office (or maybe lounging on your favorite lazy chair with your favorite TV channel on), only to have that special time interrupted by a phone call, who above all is a telemarketer? trueCall aims to make that a thing of the past, where it is touted to stop up to 98% of nuisance calls. The trueCall will learn through time as you reject numbers that you do not want to receive calls from, where it can store up to 1,000 numbers on who to reject and who to accept. In addition, if you opt for a trueCall Call Recorder memory card, you are able to record all your phone calls in 70 hour and 140 hour segments, depending on the capacity of the memory card, of course. All trueCall owners can access the Internet Control Panel to manage their database of flagged incoming numbers as well as barred ones, although you might have to fork out a yearly fee for this. Currently, trueCall is looking for a business partner to introduce it to the US market (it has already received all the relevant approvals by various bodies here) - any takers?

Do you have some extra time on your hands? Why not take an old school POTS handset and make something out of it instead? Maker Jarek Lupinski decided to recycle older phones from his school, and decided to wield his DIY magic on it by transforming the handpiece into a Bluetooth handset complete with buttons to get you started.
French Fry Phone

Urban Outfitters has outdone itself yet again, and this time round they have released yet another home device - the French Fry phone that retails for $20 a pop. Granted, more and more houses hardly use their landlines any more and depend mostly on cellphones to communicate with the outside world, but if you know someone who needs a new house phone and has a sense of humor, perhaps the French Fry phone could be a useful gift? Let's keep our fingers crossed for an officially sanctioned fries phone from McDonalds in the future as part of their promotional efforts

Talk about living in the lap of luxury with this Stefano Giovannoni-designed DECT phone which comes with a 65,000 color OLED display to make you feel more at ease keeping in touch with the rest of your family and friends. Apart from the much more interesting display compared to other phones which feature monochrome screens, the Alessi DECT phone is also equipped with preloaded backgrounds and ringtones to get you started, alongside a huge directory to keep your favorite numbers if you happen to have a social calendar that is busier than that of the President. Other features available on this $175 handset are high quality speakers, time and alarm clock, polyphonic ringtones and a backlight keypad.
